About earwax

How we remove earwax

Earwax is normal and protects your ear. Sometimes too much builds up. Then the ear can feel blocked, full or muffled.

We remove earwax by micro-suction. It's the same method used by ear, nose and throat surgeons.

It's a gentle method. If your ear feels blocked, you're welcome to book in.

If anything feels uncomfortable, just say so and we'll pause.

Ways to remove earwax

Why we use micro-suction

There are a few ways to remove earwax. Here's why we use micro-suction.

Our method

Micro-suction removal

A fine suction tube lifts the wax out. Your audiologist watches the ear canal throughout. Your ear stays dry.

  • Your audiologist sees the canal
  • No water enters your ear
  • Ask us to pause anytime
Not offered

Water syringing

Warm water is flushed in to wash wax out. We don't offer it, as we can't see the canal.

  • The canal can't be seen
  • Water stays in the ear
  • Not suitable for every ear
Not recommended

Home remedies

Cotton buds can push wax deeper into the ear. We don't recommend ear candles, as they don't remove wax.

  • Cotton buds push wax deeper
  • Ear candles don't remove wax
  • Only use CleanEars spray first

If you have sudden hearing loss, ear pain, fluid from your ear or sudden dizziness, see your GP or go to an emergency department today.

Your appointment

What happens at your appointment

We'll explain each step as we go.

  1. 01

    Soften the wax at home

Use CleanEars spray before your visit. It's sold in clinic or at pharmacies. Please avoid other drops, oil or spray.

  2. 02

    We ask a few questions

Your audiologist asks how long the ear has felt blocked. They'll also ask about any pain or past ear surgery.

  3. 03

    We look in both ears

We look into each ear with a small light. This shows us how much wax there is, and how firm.

  4. 04

    We remove the wax gently

Your audiologist lifts the wax out with a fine suction tube. You'll hear a soft suction sound near your ear.

  5. 05

    We explain what we found

Your audiologist checks the ear canal and eardrum. Then they explain what they saw. There's no pressure to book anything.
